If you receive a refund of interest you overpaid in an earlier year, this amount will be reported in box 4 of Form 1098. For information on how to report this refund, see Refunds of interest, later, in this chapter. If you are liable for part of a business debt, only your share of the total interest paid or accrued is included in your interest limitation calculation. You must generally limit business interest expense you pay or accrue during the tax year, unless an exception to the limitation is met. The facts are the same as in Example 1, except that you paid $8,000 for the original lease and $2,000 for the renewal options.
If you use an accrual method of accounting, you can’t deduct insurance premiums before the tax year in which you incur a liability for them. In addition, you can’t deduct insurance premiums before the tax year in which you actually pay them (unless the exception for recurring items applies). If you use the cash method of accounting, you generally deduct insurance premiums in the tax year you actually paid them, even if you incurred them in an earlier year. Understanding Business Expenses
Credit card companies charge a fee to businesses who accept their cards. This fee when paid or incurred by the business can be deducted as a business expense. Anticipated liabilities or reserves for anticipated liabilities aren’t deductible. For example, assume you sold 1-year TV service contracts this year totaling $50,000. From experience, you know you will have expenses of about $15,000 in the coming year for these contracts. You can’t deduct any of the $15,000 this year by charging expenses to a reserve or liability account.

If you elect to deduct your costs for removing barriers to the disabled or the elderly, claim the deduction on your income tax return (partnership return for partnerships) for the tax year the expenses were paid or incurred. The election applies to all the qualifying costs you have during the year, up to the $15,000 limit. If you make this election, you must maintain adequate records to support your deduction.
Payroll Deductions as Liabilities Vs. Payroll Expenses
When you repay any part of a loan allocated to more than one use, treat it as being repaid in the following order. The allocation of loan proceeds and the related interest is generally not affected by the use of property that secures the loan. You are a calendar year taxpayer and sign a 20-year lease to rent part of a building starting on January 1. However, before you occupy it, you decide that you really need less space.

You can deduct the cost of meals or entertainment (including the use of facilities) you sell to the public. For example, if you run a nightclub, your expense for the entertainment you furnish to your customers, such as a floor show, is a business expense that is fully deductible. You can claim a deduction for travel and non-entertainment-related meals expenses if you reimburse your employees for these financial leverage ratios expenses under an accountable plan. Generally, the amount you can deduct for non-entertainment-related meals is subject to a 50% limit, discussed later. You can no longer claim any miscellaneous itemized deductions, including the deduction for repayments (claim of right). Miscellaneous itemized deductions are those deductions that would have been subject to the 2%-of-adjusted-gross-income limitation.
However, the number of individuals you can treat as key persons is limited to the greater of the following. Because points are prepaid interest, you generally cannot deduct the full amount in the year paid. However, you can choose to fully deduct points in the year paid if you meet certain tests.
Are Small Business Taxes Based on Revenue or Gross Profit?
If you guarantee a debt that subsequently becomes worthless, the debt can qualify as a business bad debt if all of the following requirements are met. Geothermal deposits located in the United States or its possessions qualify for a percentage depletion rate of 15%. A geothermal deposit is a geothermal reservoir of natural heat stored in rocks or in a watery liquid or vapor (whether or not under pressure). For percentage depletion purposes, a geothermal deposit is not considered a gas well. Qualified natural gas from geopressured brine is eligible for a percentage depletion rate of 10%. This is natural gas that meets both of the following conditions.
Variance in tax jurisdictions

Another way to estimate federal cash tax payments is to start with reported total tax payments and then figure out a way to estimate what portion of that actual total figure can be attributed to payments to the treasury. In other words, the differences in financial accounting and the tax code may result in a tax expense that differs from the actual tax bill. A tax expense is the effective tax rate multiplied by taxable income. But calculating tax expense can be complex given that businesses and individuals are subject to various taxes, each set at a different rate. Recording business expenses properly for tax purposes requires following rules set by the IRS and standards called Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or GAAP. For most individuals, a tax expense is the amount of money owed to federal, state, and local governments in annual income taxes. This tax expense is reported annually in a tax return in which the individual resolves the difference between the amount of taxes already paid and the amount that was owed. You can also claim a deduction for expenses incurred in maintaining a home office, and the rules are similar to those that apply to auto and transportation costs.
